A Grand Parade draws a big crowd early in October and signals the official beginning of Haunted Happenings. The first Haunted Happening, in 1982, drew 50,000 people — families, couples, history buffs and Halloween enthusiasts. Today, the city estimates that about 500,000 people visit Salem in October. Due to the nature of the architecture at The Gables’ campus, our historic house museums are not wheelchair accessible.

The Retire Beckett House, which now houses the museum store, was moved in 1924. The Hooper-Hathaway House and the Counting House were moved, too. As was the birthplace of Nathaniel Hawthorne, which was originally a few blocks away on Union Street in 1958.

After leaving my backpack in the visitor center, I headed towards the mansion to join the tour and walk around the place that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel. Upon entering the mansion, I noticed that Caroline Emmerton’s restorations added considerable fan service, as the building was a blend of the original house owned by John Turner and the fictional House of the Seven Gables owned by the Pyncheon family. Think morning-to-night festivities punctuated by raucous moments and jaw-dropping creativity. There are ways around the lack of parking and long waiting lines at popular venues. After John Turner III lost the family fortune, the house was acquired by the Ingersolls, who remodeled it again. Gables were removed, porches replaced, and Georgian trim added. In the first half of the 18th century, John Turner II remodeled the house in the new Georgian style, adding wood paneling and sash windows. These alterations are preserved, very early examples of Georgian decor. The House of the Seven Gables is one of the oldest surviving timber-framed mansion houses in continental North America, with 17 rooms and over 8,000 square feet (700 m2) including its large cellars.
When Emmerton learned that the neighboring Turner-Ingersoll Mansion was up for sale, she purchased it as the settlement’s practical and collective center. Caroline Osgood Emmerton was born on April 21, 1866 in Salem, Mass. Emmerton grew up in a city that was transitioning from its past as a major shipping port to its future as a manufacturing center for both textiles and the leather industry. George Emmerton, Caroline’s father, worked in the growing chemical industry.
Nathaniel spent time with his cousin at the house when he worked in Salem. Stumbling through the reception doors with my double backpack, I walked up to the counter and asked the woman behind it if I should leave one of my bags with her or if it would be alright to carry them both around the houses. She recommended I leave my luggage with her, as I definitely wouldn’t fit in the tiny secret stairwell with such a large pack.
