Many interesting features of the original mansion remain, including unusual forms of wall insulation, original beams and rafters, and extensive Georgian paneling. Horace Ingersoll, Susanna's adopted son, told Hawthorne a story of Acadian lovers that later inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 poem Evangeline. A few years later, a kitchen lean-to and a new north kitchen ell to the rear of the house were added. The original house, which is also called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, was built in 1668 by Sea Captain John Turner, a successful fishing and trading industry leader. Thanks to his prosperous career, Turner was able to make two major additions to his home. If you take a tour, you’ll see remnants of construction in the attic. His iron chest containing gold doubloons and his decision to disinherit his niece Mary Beckford prompted Beckford’s new husband Joe Knapp and his brother Frank to hire brothers Richard and George Crowninshield to kill White. Richard hanged himself in jail, and Joe and Frank Knapp were found guilty and hanged. The Biden administration has stressed there will be no American boots on the ground for the mission.

Instead, you’ll find a fun, hour-long hike, easy in spots with some short elevations.
